Safe Shopping at the Farmers Market

Farmers markets are a relaxing place to shop, but even outdoor shoppers can do their part to keep everyone healthy during the pandemic. If you plan to visit the market the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and FDA have guidelines to follow.

Both agencies recommend social distancing, staying 6 feet away from other shoppers as much as possible.

Both also ask shoppers to wear a face mask to protect others. Yes, it may not be what you want to do, but a mask can protect the elderly or people with underlying health issues in case you have Covid-19 and don’t know it. So, think of it as your good deed for the day.

The FDA recommends making a list before you go and to carry your own sanitizing wipes with you. If you use reusable shopping bags, be sure to clean or wash them before each use.

Be mindful of what you touch. Touch only what you plan to buy. Don’t touch your face or eyes until you can wash your hands. While paying, use touchless payment methods if you can, according to the CDC guidelines. If you do use cash or a card and touch a keypad, use hand sanitizer immediately after paying. Don’t forget to clean your card, too.

If you don’t feel well skip going to the market until you do. If you are at high risk for Covid-19 complications, the CDC says go during times when not as many shoppers are present or send someone else to do your shopping for you.

When you leave the market be sure to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and, when you get home, rinse fresh fruits and vegetables under running water, says the FDA. Don’t forget to sanitize your kitchen counters.

Remember the small things count, be courteous to others, and we can all be safe and healthy while enjoying the farmers market.
