Learn how to raise backyard chickens

Keeping chickens and producing your own eggs in suburban and urban settings has become very popular.

Learn how to get started during a Backyard Urban Chicken Program from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 18, at the Volusia County Agricultural Center, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand.

Sharon Gamble, director of the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension, will discuss care and feeding, housing, breeds, health, incubation, eggs, and sources for chickens and materials. She will also explain how to find out if your property is approved for chicken farming.

The registration fee is $25. Cash or checks made payable to University of Florida will be accepted at the door. To use a credit or debit card, go to
www.eventbrite.com and type in backyard urban chicken program.
