Farmers Market Shoppers and Businesses Save

Shoppers stroll through the Wednesday Morning Farmers Market at the Volusia County Fairgrounds.

Volusia County Farm Bureau Farmers Market, open every Wednesday at the Volusia County Fairgrounds from 7 a.m. to noon, is the largest and longest running fresh produce and flea market in Volusia. Shoppers can find just about everything there at less-than-grocery-store prices. This popular weekly market attracts locals and tourists alike.

Do you have a small business that would benefit from exposure at the farmers market? New vendors who sell produce, plants, or family-friendly items are always welcomed. Outdoor booths (a 10×10 space) are only $10. Bring your own chairs, tables and shade.

Shoppers can enjoy the fresh air, a morning coffee and a snack in the market green. Wear comfortable shoes and use an umbrella for shade. It’s a relaxing way to shop.

Prices are great, too. At the June 29 market grapes were $3 for 2.5 pounds. Compare that to the same-day grocery store price of $2.49 per pound and it’s a savings of $2.60. Zucchini was 2.25 pounds for $3, compared to $1.99 per pound at the grocery store. Savings? $1.48. A two-pound basket of beefsteak tomatoes was selling for $3. At the grocery store the price per pound was $2.49. Shoppers saved $2. With family food budgets being squeezed in today’s economy these farmers market examples saved shoppers $6.08.

The Volusia farmers market got its start in 1975. It began as a place for local farmers to sell their goods and connect with consumers. The idea caught on and the vendors were eager to be there. It soon grew to include a flea market section. Small businesses and individuals with a business license and a county tax license were welcomed in.

Today, the market continues to attract new business and new shoppers.
